GPS Mapping Software - Export GPS tracks as ASCII data - Tutorial

Introduction

It can happen, that one day, you have to export GPS Track data to software that does not supported one of the GPS data output formats offered by the GPS Mapping Studio software. For instance if you want to export GPS data to a database, CAD software or calculation software such as spreadsheets, or coordinate calculators.

In this case, it is possible to convert GPS tracks to ASCII files, like a comma separated value, or CSV file. Using the "Export Track to ASCII" tool, you can generate such files.

Open the "Export Track to ASCII" dialog

The dialog can be opened by selecting "File" => "Export" => "Export ASCII Data..." from the main menu. The following dialog will appear:

Data File Options

File

Click the "Browse..." button to select the file to be exported. All files will be displayed, there is no file extension filter applied. Some file extensions that are commonly used for ASCII files include: *.ASC, *.TXT, *.LOG and *.CSV.

Data To Export

Use this selection to select the GPS track you want to export. By default, the active track log is selected in this box. If this box is empty, you have to load a valid GPS track first.

Format Options

You can specify the internal organization of the export file here.

Field Order

This option is to set the order of the fields in the file. The following is supported:

  • X, Y, Z;
  • Y, X, Z;

"X, Y, Z" means that the X (Easting or Longitude) coordinate is stored first, followed by the Y (Northing or Latitude) coordinate.
"Y, X, Z" means that the Y (Northing or Latitude) coordinate is stored first, followed by the X (Easting or Longitude) coordinate.

When the "Store elevation data" box is checked, also a third field is written containing the point's elevation (in feet or meters).

Field Separator

Use this options to specify which separator is used in the file. Most software supports "CSV" format. To writte CSV, select "Comma" as separator.

Projection and Units

By default, all GPS data is stored as WGS84 (Latitude and Longitude) format. To save the data using another map datum, or to store the data using a local map grid (Easting and Northing) format, click the "Select..." button to either select the map datum or map grid.

When you have selected to write elevation data to the file, you can also choose which units to use (Feet or Meters).
