This document describes how to backup and restore data such as waypoints, tracks and routes from and to your GPS receiver using the Eye4Gps Mapping Software. The GPX (GPS Exchange) file format allows you to store multiple waypoints, tracks and routes in a single XML file. The procedure described below, helps you finish this task within minutes.
First you have to connect your GPS to the PC running the Eye4Gps mapping software. If you haven't installed the software yet, you can download it here. Make sure your GPS is supported by the software, a list of supported GPS receiver models can be found here.
When you connected the GPS, you are now ready to download all the information to the PC. You can choose which data you want to backup. From the menu, select "GPS" and "Read Waypoints", "Read Tracks" or "Read Routes" to download the information from the GPS. You can now check the Waypoint List, Track List and Route List from the "View" menu to check whether all data has been received.
When all data has been received successfully, you can save the data to a single GPX file. To do so, select the "File" => "Export" => "GPX File" from the menu. A window pops up allowing you to specify the location of the file. Type a file name, for instance "GPSBackup12232009.gpx" and click "OK". The file is now saved. You can open the GPX file with almost any GPS mapping program around.
When all data from your GPS has been lost, you can follow the next steps to restore your data. First you have to open the data from the GPX file by selecting "File" => "Import" => "GPX File" from the menu. Now look for the file you used to backup your GPS and click "OK". You can check whether all data has been loaded by looking at the Waypoint List, Track List and Route List which can be openede from the "View" menu.
When all data is loaded, you can upload it to your GPS receiver, make sure it is connected to the PC as described in the "Connecting the GPS" section above. You can choose which data you want to restore. From the menu, select "GPS" and "Send Waypoints", "Send Tracks" or "Send Routes" to download the information from the GPS.
