When starting the software for the first time, a getting started wizard is displayed. This wizard helps you to perform the basic configuration in three steps to help you gettig started with the software. You will be asked about GPS hardware, measurement units you want to use, and a sample map of your choice is created and displayed.
The first page only displays a welcome message, click "Next" to go to the next screen.
The second page is used to get information about the GPS used. For real time navigation, all GPS devices supporting the NMEA0183 protocol can be used. However, to upload and download waypoints, tracks or routes to and from a GPS, every brand uses its own protocol. For a list of supported GPS devices, please have a look at the hardware compatibility list.
If you do not want to use or setup a GPS now, select the first option: "No, I do not have a GPS device, or I will configure it later.".
In case you own a Garmin GPS equiped with an USB port, select the second option: "Yes, I have a Garmin GPS connected to an USB port".
If your GPS is connected through a serial port, or a connection that uses a virtual serial port driver, like USB to Serial converters or Bluetooth, select the third option: "Yes, I have a GPS connected to a serial port, or via Bluetooth", and select the COM port to use. If this option is grayed out, it means no comports have been detected on your system, most probably you have to install the driver first.
After selecting an option, click "Next" to go to the next page.
You can select the units to be used in displays, dialogs and calculations. The software supports 3 types of units:
You can modify the preferred units later on, by opening the "Unit Preferences" window by selecting the "Options" => "Preferences" item from the menu. Select the units of your choice, and click "Next" to move on to the next page.
This page helps you getting started by loading a worldmap, or helps you selecting one of your own maps. You can choose between two pre-installed maps of the world, one is a JPG image, the second one is an ESRI shapefile. The third options allows you to browse your own map. Select the map of your choice, and click "Next".
Basic configuration has now been saved, just click "Finish" to get started.
